“My Name Is Jonas”, “Undone”, Buddy Holly”, and “Say It Ain’t So”… These three smash hit songs accompanied by another six great tracks make up one of the best albums of the 90’s. The magic captured on this album is hard to parallel, especially when it is still holds up after twenty years. Half of the album is made up of songs that are held as some of the bands “classic” songs, while the remaining songs on the album hold up pretty well. While the singles are for the most part, the best songs on this album, the remaining songs are really good as well.
The album kicks off with the classic “My Name Is Jonas” which is followed by another song that could have done well as a single, “No One Else”. Shortly after come the songs “Buddy Holly” and “Undone”. “Surf Wax America” is a cool surf rock song with great guitar parts thrown in the mix. Next comes the smash hit “Say It Ain’t So” with its down beat feel that becomes quickly charged with hard hitting drums and loud guitars as the chorus kicks in. The remaining three songs bring the album in for a smooth landing.
This album is a classic! Weezer really set the bar high for themselves on their first album which has resulted in a lot of criticism of the bands later works as they progressed through the years. If you enjoy this album I would recommend giving their newest album “Everything Will Be Alright In The End” a listen. I will do a review of that album in the near future. The new album is reminiscent of this album but of coarse can’t top it.
