The War on Drugs: Lost in the Dream

Released: March 18, 2014

While this is the bands third album, it is the first one that I have heard and after finding this album enjoyable will give the bands earlier works a listen in the near future. For this being my first experience listening to this band I would say that they are something special. They have a unique, distinguishable sound and this album is overall enjoyable from start to finish. The first track on the album, “Under Pressure” stands out to me because for some reason it really makes me think of “The Eagles”. The voice of the singer and the style he produces also has a hint of the great Bob Dylan which is very interesting. I don’t mean this in a negative way, this song seems to carry an almost magical element with it. The rest of the songs are all good but, this particular track is the one that stands out the most.

Lyrically, the songs on this album are constructed well. They maintain a nice fluidity and simplicity that makes for great music. At times, the singing seems somewhat faded and overrun with instrumentals but if you listen to them they are great. This album is enjoyable if you are looking for something that is somewhat mellow and laid back. There are upbeat tracks on the album but the overall tone of the music is relaxing and vibrant. I could see myself listening to this late at night before bed or on a nice, scenic drive. This album is classy, ambient, and magical. If you have seen or heard that this album is really good, believe the hype because this is something special. While it may not be one that everyone enjoys, the music is really good and I feel bands like this deserve more respect and appreciation because they do music well.
