Taking Back Sunday: Self-Titled

Released: June 28, 2011

This self-titled album was definitely a step in the right direction as a follow up to the less satisfying 2009 album “New Again” and has maintained its value in the years since its release. This album tends to get a little more emotional compared to the bands earlier albums “Where You Want To Be” and “Louder Now”. While some songs on this album do have a similar energy to those albums like the first track on the album “El Paso” or the fun paced track “It Doesn’t Feel a Thing Like Falling”, other tracks have a more mellow and serious tone. This more serious tone is demonstrated in the emotional tracks “Sad Savior” and the desperate sounding track “Since Your Gone” that seems to press the message that you don’t know what you’ve got until its gone.

This album has many similarities to the bands earlier albums when it comes to sound but lyrically demonstrates some maturity. Some of the songs lyrics are very moving and relate-able to life in general. This album is a roller coaster of emotions with demonstrations of rage, passion, fear, sadness, and joy. Overall, this album is a great addition to the catalog of albums this band has produced. It holds true to who this band is and seemed to bring them back to their center/core sound after an album that seemed to slightly depart from their established sound. This is an album not to miss. After almost three years and another great album, it still holds value.
