Bayside: There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive (2024)

  • There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive is the ninth album from New York punk rock band Bayside.
  • It follows up the bands 2019 album Interrobang. An album that, while good in general, I noted at the time as not being one I thought would have much replay value. I find this to be a correct analysis now, 5 years later. It isn’t one of the albums that initially comes to mind when I think of Bayside.
  • This album feels like a return to form of sorts as it has an energy that is more similar to past albums from the band like Killing Time and Vacancy. Both are albums I think stand out among the bands discography.
  • Castaway leans on some of the bands heavier and more angst driven manners and then Go To Hell adds in the more optimistic and bright side of the bands sound. This album quickly offers a great blend that I think fans of the band will love.
  • How To Ruin Everything blends in some of the guitar driven and almost metal influenced sound with some heavy riffs and solos. Again, this is just another layer that enhances this album.
  • Miracle boasts some great drum fills at the perfect times. It takes a solid track and makes it great.
  • Say So Long feels like a track that sort of digs a bit into the bands earlier sound with a more up-tempo, punk drive. The gang vocals are cool when they are briefly used for emphasis.
  • Bad Intentions has a great melody and a nice, soaring chorus that works very well.
  • This is a solid Bayside album and one that I think will be held in high regards among the bands fanbase. If you are new to the band, this is a great introduction as it pulls from different aspects of the bands sound that can surely be heard throughout their history.
